Happy 85th Birthday to the phenomenal Toni Morrison!
Toni Morrison is one of the most celebrated contemporary novelist. Known for her vivid story telling and intricate themes, Morrison’s various works have received critical acclaim. Her best known novels are The Bluest Eye (1970), Sula (1973), Song of Solomon (1977), and Beloved (1987). In 1988 she received the Pulitzer Prize for Beloved, and in 1993 she became the first African American woman to win the Nobel Prize for Literature. In addition to her 11 novels, Toni Morrison was commissioned to write the libretto for the opera “Margaret Garner,” wrote three children’s books, various nonfiction pieces, and plays.
Toni Morrison has degrees from Howard University and Cornell University. She has held teaching posts at Yale, Howard University, Texas Southern University, Bard College, Rutgers, and has lectured at many others.
